Shin Luong, LCSW (CA Lic #103035 & OR Lic #L14326)

I completed my graduate degree at Cal State Polytechnic, Humboldt (formerly Humboldt State University) in 2011. I also have a background in health sciences with a focus on public health prevention/promotion from California State University, Northridge.

I have had the honor of working with people from various populations: HIV/AIDS prevention for women and youth, people with developmental disabilities, homeless/runaway youth, students, homeless Veterans, and some of the most vulnerable people in the 55+ age range. My population focus at this time are 55+ and multicultural communities especially those identifying as children of immigrant parents by forced migration.

I have had the privilege to live abroad and travel freely and experience various cultures for a number of years before settling into becoming a therapist. Being abroad gave me the opportunity to see people through a lens of connection without financial gain or constraints, which is what drives my practice today when it comes to serving financially vulnerable people in our community.

I grew-up in a multi-generational household with grandparents, parents, and other extended family members who are refugees of the American War in Viet Nam. Although I was never exposed to the war, I grew-up with stories of the war (and fortunately they are still shared). All my family members who lived through the war are still negatively impacted to this day. The work I do is focused on trauma and how that impacts everyone in every generation, along with a focus on navigating multiple cultures simultaneously.

I draw upon therapeutic modalities including Neuroaffective Relational Model (NARM), Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), Flash Technique, and I can provide integration therapy for Psychedelic Assisted Therapies. I find these modalities can assist us in getting to the root of what may preventing us from being our "authentic self."

As your therapist you'll often hear me say that "I don't know anything" as I find it to be the truth. You are the expert on yourself and I am here to help you lay out the pieces to hopefully move towards clarity, for you to piece it all back together, and create a strong foundation and different experience for yourself (yeah, it's a lot of work for you). My hope is that we can walk along side each other to help you connect and/or re-connect to your heart's desires. I am looking forward in sharing this heart work with you.

I view therapy as a collaborative process between the practitioner and the client. Together we will work to process and investigate situations, narratives and patterns that you wish to better understand or transform. Compassion, non-judgement and an understanding of the diverse backgrounds and experiences of my clients are at the center of my therapeutic approach. I aim to work with clients to identify which therapy models and tools best fit your needs. I believe that we are the experts in our own healing journey and I wish to facilitate a space where you can access and organize the knowledge you hold.

My population emphasis is on young adults, college students and aging populations and I have a therapeutic focus on working with stress and anxiety. I have experience working in Native communities and with LGBTQ+ populations. I offer individual counseling in person in Eureka or via tele-health where you can access services from the comfort of your own home.

I use an integrated therapeutic approach that combines tools from multiple therapeutic modalities. Currently my major focuses are relational, cultural affirming and trauma informed. I also incorporate skills from EFT, Flash Technique, ACT, CBT, Narrative Therapy, Compassionate Inquiry, Somatic, and DBT.
